Poem: A Lesson Has Been Learned, I Move On

Poem written by: Sandie Gonzalez

A Lesson Has Been Learned, I Move On

You know you have learned something
when you no longer attach yourself to someone's negative words or actions
The hurt they might have caused you becomes a lesson for them to learn
When we stop reacting, change has occurred

A lesson has been learned, I move on

You know you have found love
when everyone walks out of your life, because your issues are too tough to handle
and you stand alone, give yourself a hug, and forgive them
Compassion is something they can not give
Instead of judging you understand, denial is bliss for some
Acknowledgment brings wisdom for others

A lesson has been learned, I move on

You know you have found peace of mind
when your life remains the same
No job, college student at 30 something, teenage kid,
three dogs that drive you crazy and ten year old daughter that acts crazy
and you no longer think or ask
Why did I not do things differently
You believe you are right where you should be
and you embrace all that is your life and no longer worry
You stop being in a hurry, relax and thank God for giving you such a great life

A lesson has been learned, I move on

You know you have found forgiveness
When you look at your mother's face
and you no longer wish for her to be someone
You feel the love you denied for believing she defended that guy
You hear and see her cry
and you no longer want to understand why
You wrap your arms around her and say
I want to get to know you
I love you

A lesson has been learned, I move on

You finally know what fun is when
you sing and dance wearing jogging pants
Plop on your bed and read a book
It's friday night and I'm at home

A lesson has been learned, I move on

You know you are living the moment
when you no longer look over your shoulder, cry at night,
act like a child or wish for death because you keep reliving the past
Instead you bring forth your story, smile with hope, and say this is me
I am not my past or story
I am okay, I am here now in the present
35 and ready for right now
I am without fear, anger or hatred
I am happy to be Sandie

A lesson has been learned, I move on

I let go
I love
I finally learned how wonderful and strong
I AM
